More Information About George VI Six Pence's
The Six Pence was first struck in 1551 in the Reign of Edward VI and it
was not until 1967 during the Reign of Elizabeth II that striking
stopped. The Six Pence was no longer struck due to the decimalization
of the currency in 1971, it did stay in circulation however until June
1980 but not at its face value of Six Pence but at a new value of Two
and a Half New Pence.
George VI Six Pence's were struck from 1937 until 1952. Their were
three different types of George VI Six Pence struck, the first type
(1937 - 1946) was struck in .500 Silver. The second type (1947 - 1948)
was debased to save money and was struck in cupro nickel and the design
of the coin remained unchanged. The third type (1949 - 1952) had a
newly designed reverse which makes it really stand out from the first
two types.
