More Information About George V Three Pence's
The Three Pence was first struck in 1551 during the Reign of Edward VI
and was struck intermittently through the 16th and 17th centuries. After
the Great Re coinage the Three Pence was struck for Maunday Coinage and
some for Colonial use. Demand eventually meant that in 1845 the Three
Pence was struck for circulation in Britain. The silver Three Pence
continued to be struck for circulation in Britain until it was replaced
during the Reign of George VI with the Brass Three Pence.
George V Three Pence's were struck from 1911 until 1936. Their were
three different types struck due to differing alloys and design. The
first type was made of .925 Silver and used the traditional Crowned 3
on the reverse. The second type used the same design but had its silver
content was reduced to .500 Silver. The third type had a new design for the
reverse made up of three Oak leafs and Acorns.

In
keeping
with
the old tradition George's portrait faces to
the left, in
the opposite direction to his predecessor. George V portrait depicts
him bare headed with no Crown.

The reverse device is the traditional Crowned 3 used on Three Pences.
